In 2008, Heidi Schroeder hopped a flight to Uganda, Africa with hopeful anticipation and a suitcase of art supplies. Six weeks later, she returned home with a big question and a suitcase of paper bead necklaces. And so, SOMO was born, though we didn’t know it at the time. What began from one question -- how can we consistently generate funds for children’s school fees in Gulu, Uganda?-- has become SOMO’s ever-evolving mission. We are continually challenged by the Acholi child's reality: Twenty-five years of civil war in Northern Uganda has created an environment of instability and fear, and an environment where education is a nearly unobtainable luxury.
